Kathryn Attwood

Kathryn studied English Literature at University but spent the following ten years working for the Home Office where she honed her writing skills by drafting Parliamentary speeches for Government Ministers.  It was only after the birth of her children that she tentatively joined her local village amateur dramatics society, not having performed since her school days.  Since then she has acted in numerous plays with Surrey/Sussex groups, including Guildburys Theatre Company with whom she was fortunate to perform at both the Edinburgh Fringe and Cornwall’s famous Minack Theatre. Her first full-length play as a writer, The Locked Room, was given its premiere by Guildburys in 2013.  Described as a “masterful new play....a riveting drama from start to finish” this first production was awarded a NODA Accolade of Excellence.

Passionate about both amateur theatre and new writing, Kathryn co-founded Horsham-based Lights & Bushels Theatre Company in 2015 with the aim of showcasing new material by way of innovative productions in non-traditional settings.

Kathryn Attwood, Kay Rowan (NODA) and Barry Syder Her adaptation of Jane Austen’s lesser-known novel Lady Susan, which she also directed, was the group’s first outing. The entire run of open-air performances sold out in advance and critics and audience members alike praised the “laugh-out-loud funny” dialogue and “seamless transition” of a novel composed entirely of letters into a “thoroughly entertaining play”. In July 2016 this production was announced as the winner of the 2015 NODA (South East) Regional Councillor’s Award for Drama.

Kathryn lives in West Sussex with her husband and two teenage children.
