Cheryl Barrett

Cheryl May lives on the Isle of Wight and is published under the name Cheryl Barrett.

A prolific writer since childhood, Cheryl has over a hundred published scripts which include full length and one act plays, plays for schools and youth theatre, pantomimes, monologues and comedy sketches. Cheryl is excited to join the team of writers published by Stagescripts Ltd.

Discovering a passion for drama many years ago, Cheryl enjoys singing, directing and has acted in comedies, serious drama, pantomimes and musical theatre, one of her favourites was appearing in a musical comedy at The King’s Head Theatre in Islington a few years ago. Favourite character parts include playing Madame Arcati in ‘Blithe Spirit’ and Dorcas in ‘Ladies In Lavender’.

As a mature student Cheryl completed an Access course at City Lit. She enjoyed the Creative Writing module so much that she went on to Middlesex University to hone her craft and has a BA in Writing & Publishing.

Cheryl writes theatre reviews and articles for Sardines Magazine for Amateur Theatre and has written articles for Sardines annual pantomime supplement since its concept. Her books, ‘The Pantomime Writers Book of Gags and Routines’ and ‘More Gags and Routines’, co-written with Bob Heather, have proved a popular resource for pantomime writers. Cheryl loves pantomime and has written, directed and appeared in many pantomimes over the years and has played a variety of panto characters from Fairy Godmother, Comic Duo and Villainess to Friar Tuck, Will Scarlet, a Robot and the front end of a camel. 

Cheryl performs her comedy monologues and duologues at spoken word events and at Townswomen’s Guild and Women’s Institute meetings. Cheryl continues to be an active member in amateur theatre.

Lockdowns didn’t deter Cheryl’s love of performing as she took part in online concerts, Kitchen Sink productions and Zoom plays staged by the Townswomen Guild Players.

Cheryl says, “I enjoy all aspects of theatre from the writing to acting in and directing shows. For me, one aspect informs the other.”
