Spiers, Hilary

Hilary Spiers

Hilary Spiers

Hilary Spiers writes plays, novels, and short stories, predominantly about older women whose complex lives, she believes, rarely get the prominence they deserve. Her dramatic work has been performed at the Hampstead Theatre, Stamford Theatre, The Riverside Studios, The Troubadour, numerous theatre festivals and in Australia.

Hoovering on The Edge’ in particular has proved very popular with amateur groups since it offers such strong roles for women. ‘First Do No Harm’, produced by Tea and Tenacity Theatre Company, toured the Midlands in 2014. ‘A Singular Deception’, developed with the same company and with Arts Council funding, brings to life the extraordinary Dr James Barry, born Margaret Ann Buckley. Hilary was commissioned to write and produce a piece of immersive theatre about the legendary Sarah Siddons for the 2019 Stamford Georgian Festival (‘Mrs Siddons’ Dressing Room’) which enjoyed a sell-out run. It was followed by a commission for an online sequel ‘Mrs Siddons in Lockdown’ in 2020. Her play ‘Ladybird, Ladybird’, premiered in September 2019 at Stamford Theatre.

Her novels ‘Hester & Harriet’ and its sequel ‘Hester & Harriet: Love, Lies & Linguine’ are published by Allen & Unwin. Her collection of short stories (‘The Hour Glass’) is published by Pewter Rose Press. She has won several national short story competitions, been twice short-listed for the Bridport Prize, contributed to various anthologies and her stories have been broadcast on radio.
