Synopsis

Jukebox Musical 'Wake Up Little Suzie!' by Philip Goulding

'Wake Up Little Suzie!' is a feelgood jukebox musical set in Tilton’s holiday camp during the long hot summer of 1976. It follows the fortunes of newcomer chalet-maid and wannabe singer Suzie Bellamy, who, on the run from a loveless marriage to a careless clot, finds herself competing with her ambitious workmate Ben, in the camp's fiercely-contested annual talent show.

The musical features a poptastic parade of solid gold hits including ‘Summer in The City’, ‘Bye Bye Baby’, ‘More More More’, ‘When You’re Young And In Love’, ‘In The Midnight Hour’, ‘Summerlove Sensation’, ‘Under The Moon of Love’, ‘A Little Bit More’, ‘(Is This the Way To) Amarillo’, ‘I Only Wanna Be With You’, ‘That’s Alright (Mama)’, ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’, and ‘Crocodile Rock’.

But it isn’t just about the tunes. The entertainment at Tilton’s also features a stand-up comedy contest bitterly fought out between husband and wife duo Derek and Valerie, a top-billed tight-trousered TV crooner named Rocky Sorrento, a frighteningly-foxy female impersonator called Lucille La Mer, the heartbroken ventriloquist Chris Peacock (and his unsympathetic dummy Terry Bull), a surprise Elvis impersonator, and of course, the ever-present promise of steamy holiday romance.

They say that you used to be able to see the sea from Tilton’s Holiday Camp, on a clear day, before they built the power station. But nobody at Tilton’s will want to leave the premises until a winner is declared between Suzie Bellamy or Ben Tilton (and he happens to be the owner’s son). Is it a stitch-up, or will true talent triumph? This sizzling jukebox musical is guaranteed to have everyone fondly remembering their own Seaside Special summer of love.

'Wake Up Little Suzie!' broke box-office records when it was produced in a co-production by Oldham Coliseum Theatre and Basingstoke Haymarket Theatre in 2005.
