Career Day

    by Paul Adam Levy

Synopsis

Black Comedy Play: 'Career Day' by Paul Adam Levy

A witty one act black comedy ideal for youth theatre groups about what it means to earn a living in the modern world. Winner of two writing awards at the Welwyn Drama Festival and Waltham Forest Festival of Theatre.

Four schoolboys with wildly different career ambitions clash over their ideas of what adult working life and job satisfaction really is. But when one boy admits to not having any plans for the future, the others fear he’ll face the wrath of the young, caffeine addicted careers counsellor. They try in vain to convince him that their planned professions hold the key to happiness, instead he realises his only ambition is to see the out of bounds school pond.

His simple, care-free vision briefly inspires the others to think about the importance of enjoying the small things in life. That is until the demonic careers councillor returns to tell them uncomfortable truths about the real world and drags the ambitionless schoolboy to hell.

A dark comedy with quick back and forth dialogue, Career Day is a one act play which captures the contrasting feelings of hope and dread experienced by pupils when receiving careers advice.

The schoolboy and councillor characters can be cross-gender and are ideal for youth groups looking for fun roles with scope. The play has also been performed by both adults and females playing the schoolboys to great success.
